The field of architecture can be entered upon the successful completion of a college degree program. Many architecture schools can help students learn how to build an educational foundation. The complete process of creatively designing a product or structure has to be learned. Students can start to build a foundation for future careers when they decide to obtain formal training. In order to step directly into an architect career students are required to complete a bachelor's degree program. Becoming specialized requires students to continue their education at the master's degree level, which gives them more knowledge of architectural design and implementation practices. Undergraduate training is very intensive and requires students to dedicate four to five years to study. Most programs break down education into two parts. The first two years of training provides students with the basics of architecture allowing them to lay a foundation for their future careers. The basics cover design principles, materials, and tools used inside today's profession. The last two to three years of training explore creativity, design, and collaborative teamwork. Specific courses may include training in computer aided drafting, architectural planning theories, and modern architecture. In today's field completing a bachelor's degree program is usually only preparation for advanced degree programs. However, some companies do hire junior architects that can work their way up the professional hierarchy. Most careers available to students that have a bachelor's degree include becoming architecture assistants, interns, or design assistants. Further education is very practical in order to build a stronger foundation needed to understand advance concepts. Masters degree programs typically last two to three years and continue building upon the knowledge gained inside a bachelor's degree program. Students can expect to learn structural design in connection with aesthetics and architecture planning. The interdisciplinary approach to learning has students studying the history, technology, and theory of the field. Programs often teach one architectural style but courses are integrated into learning that focuses on major aspects of the field such as urban design, architectural structure, building science and construction management courses. Some common courses that students take may include: *Environmental Design *Architectural Computer Graphics *Human Settlement Patterns Before taking the licensing exams students have to successfully complete degree programs and work directly with a licensed professional for a specific period of time. These requirements are set in place to help prepare students to take the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards exam. Students should study the field to decide which architecture degree program is best for their career goals. Students are able to complete undergraduate and graduate degree training from numerous schools that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Interested students should start their educational training by seeking out accredited programs.
